  1. I developed a paronychia on one side of my ring fingernail after accidently smashing it with a rock. I was camping at the time, not near any hospital, so I landed and drained it myself. I used a very sharp tip of a pocket knife boiled in water, washed the finger and my hands well with hot water and Palmolive dish soap, then incised it along the edge of the nail. It gave instant relief to release the pus. I squeezed it out until there was nothing but blood, then irrigated the wound in nail polish remover since I had nothing better. I figured it is a disinfectant that kills off any bacteria. Was this okay? I dried it off with clean cotton cloth and put on a little Vaseline and a bandaid. It healed in a few days without incident.
